Max Verstappen topped the timesheets as Formula 1 returned to the Sepang circuit for the first time in nine years, hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia after the original venue was cancelled due to the Middle East conflict.
Verstappen Claims Fastest Lap Ahead of Russell
Red Bull's Max Verstappen set the fastest time in the first practice session, finishing 0.383 seconds ahead of George Russell in an upgraded Mercedes. Russell, who won last week in Azerbaijan, noted that tyre wear on his car appeared to be an outlier compared to Verstappen's performance on the abrasive surface.
Isack Hadjar of Red Bull was third fastest, 0.783 seconds off the pace, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Kimi Antonelli in Mercedes finished fourth, with Alpine's Pierre Gasly in seventh and Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad rounding out the top ten.
Grid Penalties and Track Conditions Shape the Session
Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad will start from the back of the grid due to a penalty for using too many engine parts, while Isack Hadjar faces an expected five-place grid penalty for the same reason. Drivers highlighted the high level of tyre degradation caused by the abrasive surface, with Russell's wear standing out as particularly severe.
The Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races were cancelled at the beginning of the year due to the war in the Middle East, prompting Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to negotiate holding the event in Malaysia instead. The trophy presented will be the Bahrain Grand Prix trophy, with rosewater sprayed on the podium rather than champagne.
Mercedes Upgrade and McLaren Expectations
Mercedes introduced their first major upgrade since the Canadian Grand Prix, featuring a new floor and rear bodywork, though they expected McLaren to be the team to beat at this track. Despite the upgrade, McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris finished in 11th and 12th places respectively during the session.
The Sepang circuit is regarded as one of the best layouts among the new generation of circuits that came on stream at the end of the last century and into this one. The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia marks a significant logistical achievement, combining sporting competition with cultural activities celebrating Bahrain's heritage.
