Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham told ESPN she is concentrating on her team's final four regular-season games rather than the controversy surrounding Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declaring themselves eligible for the WNBA draft.
Cunningham Prioritises the Team Amid Draft Eligibility Storm
Sophie Cunningham said she is focused on the Fever's four remaining regular-season games and not the commotion around Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declaring themselves eligible for the WNBA draft. "I'm gonna let them do them," Cunningham told ESPN on Friday as part of a wide-ranging interview. "I'm just focused on the Fever and on our sport. I think we have four more games left. I'm trying to just really dial in and keep the main thing the main thing."
Cunningham, who is averaging 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, relaunched her podcast with new host Drew Hanlen and a new name, "No Hesitation," on Thursday. She said she wants to protect young girls in a locker room or sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men, but she is choosing not to let outside noise distract her from the court.
Kanter Freedom and White Challenge WNBA Draft Rules
Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from the Fever's game against the Sky on Aug. 23 in Chicago following a verbal altercation with guard Natasha Cloud. He has since filed a lawsuit arguing his First Amendment rights had been violated. Kanter Freedom posted his intention to play in the WNBA on social media Aug. 7.
Royce White attended a Fever game against the Connecticut Sun on Aug. 28. The WNBA has been on a break since Aug. 31 while many of its stars, including the Fever's Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, compete at the FIBA World Cup in Berlin.
Fever Battle for Playoff Home-Court Advantage
The Fever are 26-14 and in fifth place in the standings. The team is battling for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, which begin Sept. 27. Cunningham said she supported restricting transgender girls and women from girls' and women's sports in an ESPN article published July 21.
Rallies for and against transgender inclusion popped up at Fever games in the weeks after the article. Cunningham said, "I think this team has great potential to make a really great playoff run." She added, "And if I'm filling my brain and my energy with all that stuff, then it's taking away from the team. And so I'm just trying to stay here and let them do what they want to do."
