The 36-year-old Spaniard, the oldest player competing this weekend, let out a roar after holing a 15-foot putt to earn Europe an unlikely half point in the final fourball match of the day. Ciganda's celebration evoked memories of the nerve-shredding finale at Finca Cortesin in 2023, when her putt allowed Europe to retain the trophy with a 14-14 tie.
Nelly Korda and her playing partner Lauren Coughlin both left match-winning putts short to allow Ciganda, who had crucially won the 16th hole with an eagle, to deliver a stunning reprieve for Anna Nordqvist's team. Ciganda is playing in her eighth Solheim Cup, adding to her already impressive record in the competition.
Europe's Mixed Start on Day One
European hopes of parity had begun to fade into the shadows of the evening sunshine, with Angela Stanford's visitors seemingly assuming control of the 20th edition of the biggest team competition in women's golf. Charley Hull and Lottie Woad, the two highest-ranked players in the European side, emerged on the opening tee at 06:40 BST but failed to ignite against the formidable pairing of Korda and Allisen Corpuz.
Hull and Woad let a three-hole advantage slip on the back nine on Friday afternoon against Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin, who was playing only her third competitive round since June. Despite the setback, Europe's three other debutants, Julia Lopez Ramirez, Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud, delivered in style, with Rhodes and Nadaud defeating Corpuz and Auston Kim 2&1.
US Dominance and European Resilience
Korda set the tone early on Friday with her fifth win with Corpuz, equalling the points record for pairings set by Europe's Alison Nicholas and Laura Davies. The US pairing of Alison Lee and Coughlin took their foursomes match 3&2 against Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier, while Megan Khang achieved her sixth consecutive win in Solheim matches alongside Alison Lee.
Swedish duo Maja Stark and Linn Grant defeated Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2, and Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit defeated Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan in another match that went down the 18th. Maguire improved her career Solheim Cup record to nine wins, three defeats and one halved match, giving her the highest winning percentage of any European player that has played five matches.
