Somalia’s Ministry of Defence says joint airstrikes carried out with Turkish support have killed dozens of Al Shabab fighters in the Lower Shabelle region.
Wararka Soomaaliya
In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry said the Somali National Army (SNA), supported by Türkiye’s armed forces, conducted F-16 airstrikes targeting positions in the Godey area.
According to the ministry, the strikes hit caves, weapons depots and shelters allegedly used by the armed group.
Officials said around 35 Al Shabab fighters were killed and more than 20 others were seriously injured. The figures have not been independently verified.
Faahfaahinta
The ministry said the operation triggered a series of secondary explosions at the site, which it said suggested the area had been used to store weapons, explosives and military supplies.
It also alleged that vehicles loaded with explosive materials were present at the location and were being prepared for attacks.
The operation is part of Somalia’s broader military campaign against Al Shabab, an Islamist militant group that has carried out attacks in Somalia and across parts of the Horn of Africa for more than a decade.
Saamaynta
In recent years, Somali government forces have increasingly combined ground operations with air support coordinated alongside international partners, including Türkiye.
The Ministry of Defence thanked international partners for supporting counter-terrorism efforts and said operations against Al Shabab would continue until what it described as the threat posed by the group had been eliminated.
Al Shabab has not immediately commented on the claims.
