MOGADISHU — A major fire swept through Somalia’s largest commercial hub, Bakara Market, on Tuesday, destroying dozens of shops and leaving traders with significant losses after flames tore through business areas near the Cabdalla Shideeye junction, witnesses said.
The blaze broke out inside the crowded market and spread rapidly across several sections, consuming shops, goods and business property before firefighters from the Banadir Regional Administration arrived and brought the fire under control.
Several traders said they lost their entire stock and sources of income in the incident. One shop owner described the destruction as a devastating blow, saying his business had supported multiple families before everything was destroyed.
Faahfaahinta
“My property has burned down. My business used to support many families, and now I have nothing left,” the trader said.
Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the fire or provided an official assessment of the financial damage. However, witnesses said the fire began within the market before quickly spreading to nearby stalls and commercial premises.
Tuesday’s incident is the latest in a series of fires to hit Bakara Market, where thousands of traders depend on daily commerce. Previous fires have been linked to electrical faults, explosions and security-related incidents, causing widespread losses and forcing traders to temporarily close their businesses.
Saamaynta
The repeated blazes have renewed concerns over fire safety measures in the densely packed marketplace, where narrow passages, crowded shops and limited emergency access have complicated firefighting efforts in the past.
Bakara Market remains the economic centre of Mogadishu, serving as a vital trading hub for food, clothing, electronics and household goods. Any major disruption at the market has a direct impact on thousands of businesses and consumers across the Somali capital.
