MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed a Kenyan police patrol near the Somali border on Tuesday, killing five officers from an elite counter-terrorism unit. As reinforcements rushed to the scene, a roadside bomb tore through one of their armoured vehicles. Kenyan police confirmed both attacks on Wednesday, calling it one of the deadliest single strikes yet in a district that has become the epicentre of the group’s cross-border insurgency.

Al-Shabaab, which is linked to Al-Qaeda, claimed the operation through affiliated media outlets and attributed it to its armed wing. The group’s reported toll is far higher than what Kenyan authorities have confirmed – a familiar and unresolved gap in how the two sides account for casualties along this contested frontier.
A Kenyan police report says the assault began shortly after midday. A patrol from the Special Operations Group – an elite police counter-terrorism unit – came under fire near Wantey Dam, roughly 6km (4 miles) from the Lafey police station. Five officers were killed in the initial burst of gunfire.

Al-Shabab’s affiliated media network told a different story. It claimed 13 soldiers were killed and 12 wounded, and said its fighters destroyed an armoured vehicle and five motorcycles. The group also claimed to have seized weapons, military equipment and one motorcycle.

Kenyan authorities have not corroborated any of those figures. The gulf between official and Al-Shabaab-claimed numbers is a near-constant feature of cross-border clashes here, where remote terrain and tight security restrictions make independent verification difficult.

Tuesday’s ambush was not an isolated event. It is the latest in a string of attacks concentrated along the same stretch of Mandera in recent weeks – a pattern Kenyan officials say shows Al-Shabaab’s intent to keep the region under sustained pressure.
