US Embassy Responds to Somalia Security Force Flag Desecration
Mogadishu (Somaliguardian) – The United States Embassy in Mogadishu has expressed concern over the desecration of the American flag by members of Somalia’s security forces, stating that such actions harm bilateral relations.
In a statement, the embassy acknowledged the Somali government’s swift response and accountability measures following the incident. “The U.S. Embassy appreciates the Federal Government of Somalia’s quick response and decisive actions,” the statement read.
The embassy emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong partnership between the two countries, highlighting the significant financial and military support the United States has provided to Somalia. “Anti-American acts harm our bilateral relationship. The United States has provided billions of taxpayer dollars in assistance to Somalia,” the statement added.
The incident occurred following the circulation of a video showing individuals identified as Somali Security Forces desecrating the American national flag. In response, the Somali government announced the arrest of the soldiers involved and vowed to take disciplinary and legal measures.
The embassy’s remarks come at a sensitive moment in U.S.-Somalia relations, as the United States has recently informed the African Union of its intention to end its support for United Nations logistical assistance to the peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
