Mogadishu (HOL) — A U.S. airstrike, carried out in coordination with the Somali National Army (SNA), destroyed two vessels carrying advanced weaponry destined for Al-Shabaab, Somali and American officials confirmed on Thursday.

According to a press release, the precision strike targeted an unflagged cargo ship and a smaller escort vessel operating within Somali territorial waters. All individuals aboard the vessels were killed, and initial assessments indicated there were no civilian casualties.

The boats reportedly transported “modern military equipment” to enhance Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities. While neither U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) nor Somali officials disclosed the exact nature of the weaponry, prior intelligence has linked similar shipments to small arms, explosives, and electronic components used in attacks against Somali forces and African Union peacekeepers.

“This operation demonstrates our shared commitment to disrupting Al-Shabaab’s supply chains and enhancing maritime security,” an AFRICOM spokesperson said. Somali officials echoed the sentiment, calling the strike “a significant blow” to the group’s ability to sustain its insurgency.

The location of the strike was not disclosed, but analysts believe it likely occurred along smuggling corridors in the Gulf of Aden or the Indian Ocean, where maritime arms trafficking networks tied to Al-Shabaab have previously been reported.

Somalia’s federal government credited international partners for their continued intelligence and operational support, emphasizing the need for sustained cooperation to combat maritime-based terrorism and prevent the flow of arms into militant hands.
