Somalia Strengthens Ebola Preparedness Amid Regional Outbreak Risks

Published:

The federal government of Somalia has intensified its national Ebola preparedness and surveillance efforts, citing the urgent need to prevent the importation of the virus as a deadly outbreak continues to affect neighboring East African nations.

While Somalia remains free of any confirmed Ebola cases, the Ministry of Health and Human Services has placed the country on high alert. The government is expanding screening protocols at all points of entry-including airports, seaports, and land borders, as part of a proactive strategy to mitigate the regional threat.

This heightened posture follows the declaration of a public health emergency in parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, where the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus is currently circulating. Health officials warn that the virus’s cross-border reach necessitates immediate, coordinated defensive measures to protect Somalia’s vulnerable populations.

“Our mission is clear: we are mobilizing every available resource to detect and stop this virus at our doorstep,” stated H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Adam, Minister of Health and Human Services, during a recent briefing at the National Public Health Emergency Operation Center (PHEOC).

The government has formally activated its National Ebola Emergency Preparedness and Readiness Plan. Key measures include the rollout of an electronic traveler health declaration form equipped with QR codes to streamline screening. Furthermore, the Ministry has aligned its strategies with international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC, to bolster laboratory diagnostics, infection prevention, and clinical readiness.

According to the Ministry, the national response structure is now fully operational across both national and sub-national levels, ensuring that surveillance, case management, and logistical support teams are ready to respond to any potential alerts.

Public health officials are urging the community to remain calm and vigilant. The Ministry has advised citizens to practice regular hand hygiene, avoid contact with the bodily fluids of sick individuals, and immediately report any symptoms to health authorities. Furthermore, the government has warned the public against spreading rumors, emphasizing that official updates will be disseminated exclusively through government channels to prevent misinformation.
