Mogadishu (HOL) – The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced the official launch of Somalia’s National ID Card printing to empower citizens and improve access to essential services and rights.
The launch was inaugurated by Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh and Deputy Minister Abdihakim Hassan Ashkir, who received their ID cards during the ceremony in Mogadishu.
“We deeply appreciate the patience and support of the Somali people during the implementation of this historic initiative and apologize for any delays in the card printing process,” said NIRA Director-General Abdiwali Ali Abdulle (Timacadde). “The extended timeline was necessary to prioritize acquiring state-of-the-art equipment and high-quality materials, a goal we are proud to have achieved.”
NIRA also announced that citizens registered will receive an SMS notification once their ID cards are ready. The message will include precise details about when and where they can collect their cards, ensuring an orderly and efficient distribution process. The Authority urges all Somali citizens to register to receive their national ID cards
Last year, NIRA established a regional office in Baidoa, South West State, and is planning to inaugurate additional centers in other federal member states soon.
