Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali State Minister for Religious Affairs, Abukar Sheikh, on Sunday urged young people fighting alongside Al-Shabaab to take advantage of the amnesty offered by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, describing it as a critical opportunity for redemption and reintegration into society.
The state minister emphasized that Somali youth affiliated with Al-Shabaab, including those who were misled, now have an unprecedented chance to save their lives and help rebuild their country.
“It is important that Somali youth understand they have a chance to escape from Al-Shabaab and take advantage of the President’s amnesty. This is a historic opportunity to save their lives and effectively return to society,” Abukar Sheikh said.
The statement coincides with the Federal Government’s ongoing preparations for a large-scale offensive against Al-Shabaab, as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud continues to advocate for amnesty as part of the government’s strategy to weaken the group’s influence.
In recent years, the number of Al-Shabaab defectors has steadily increased. It follows intensified military operations and airstrikes by Somali government forces and their international partners targeting Al-Shabaab strongholds in southern and central Somalia.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reiterated the government’s commitment to welcoming those who choose to leave Al-Shabaab, offering them the opportunity to reintegrate into society and contribute to national development.
