Mogadishu (HOL) – The speakers of both houses of Somalia’s Parliament have announced that the 6th session of the 11th Parliament will officially convene on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

In a joint statement released on Monday, the speakers urged lawmakers currently abroad to return before the session’s opening to ensure the timely execution of parliamentary duties.

“The Speaker of the House of the People of the Somali Parliament held consultations regarding the opening of the 6th session and has set February 22, 2025, as the official date,” the statement read.

The announcement follows escalating political tensions, with opposition lawmakers warning last week that they would hold an alternative session elsewhere if the parliamentary meetings were further delayed. Opposition members have accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of overstepping his authority and undermining the legislative process.

The upcoming session is expected to be shaped by ongoing electoral disputes and broader political disagreements, which could affect parliamentary proceedings in the weeks ahead.
