Dhusamareb (HOL) – Somali army forces, in coordination with local clan militias, killed six Al-Shabaab militants in a planned military operation in Dabagalo, a locality under Harardhere district in Mudug region, on Thursday night.

According to military officials, the joint forces targeted an Al-Shabaab-controlled checkpoint where the militants were extorting money from travelers and civilians.

Colonel Gaanburi, the commander leading the operation, told Somali National TV that the assault resulted in the elimination of the Al-Shabaab leader overseeing Dabagalo and nearby villages.

“The Somali National Army and local forces launched a planned attack last night at 11:30 p.m., targeting Khawarij leaders and fighters in Dabagalo under Harardhere district,” Colonel Gaanburi said.

The operation comes just hours after Somali army forces and allied clan militias killed 130 Al-Shabaab attackers in the Middle Shabelle region, following militant assaults on four villages with explosive-laden vehicles early Thursday morning.

The al Qaeda-linked militant group has conducted a bloody insurgency in southern and central Somalia since 2007, killing thousands of people in a campaign that has been marked by deadly bombings in the capital Mogadishu.
