Russia’s Collapse in Ukraine
Ukraine’s long-range strikes have hit targets in Russia, with estimates suggesting that 1.4 million Russian soldiers have been killed since the war began.
Russia’s armed forces aim to capture the remaining 20 percent of Ukraine’s partially occupied eastern Donetsk region by the end of the year, but have failed to meet 14 previous deadlines.
Analysts estimate that capturing the region would take an additional 14 years, on top of the 12 years already spent in the conflict.
Casualties and Advance Rates
In June alone, Ukraine estimates that Russia suffered 39,490 casualties, exceeding their monthly recruitment capacity of 24,000-30,000.
This surge in casualties has coincided with a dramatic slowdown in Russia’s territorial gains. In the first half of 2025, Russian forces captured 2,190 square kilometers (845 square miles), compared to just 622 square kilometers (240 square miles) so far this year.
These figures suggest that Russia’s advance has collapsed, despite increased casualties.
Zelenskyy’s Strategy
President Zelenskyy attributes Ukraine’s success this year to strategic decisions made last year to boost drone production and develop long-range missiles. These resources have been used to disrupt fuel and ammunition supplies to Russian forces.
