Sudan Court Sentences Paramilitary Leader to Death in Absentia

A court in Sudan’s army-controlled city of Port Sudan on Sunday sentenced paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo and 15 others to death in absentia over charges of killing a regional governor and war crimes in Darfur.

The ruling comes amidst ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and Daglo’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over 11 million people.

The court found Daglo and his associates guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and attacks on civilians and public facilities.

The case revolves around the killing of West Darfur governor Khamis Abbakar in June 2023, shortly after RSF forces captured El-Geneina, the state capital. Abbakar was assassinated after accusing the RSF of atrocities against civilians.

The RSF has denied involvement in genocide and other war crimes. The court has promised to refer the case to the Supreme Court for review and pursue the arrest and extradition of the convicts through international channels.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF is one of the deadliest in Africa, triggering the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis.
