Jowhar (HOL) — Abdikarin Mohamed Diriye and Abdulqadir Mohamud Mohamed were elected on Saturday to fill the vacant parliamentary seats HOP097 and HOP098, respectively, following the deaths of MP Khadija Mohamed Diiriye and MP Mohamud Mohamed Jimcale (Seeseey) in 2023.

Abdikarin Mohamed Diriye, a sibling of the late Khadija Diiriye, secured 78 votes to win HOP097, while Abdulqadir Mohamud Mohamed, identified as a son of the late MP Seeseey, received 90 votes to win HOP098.

The election was held in Jowhar, the administrative capital of Hirshabelle State, and was organized by the Federal Electoral Comission.

The event was attended by members of both houses of the Hirshabelle regional government, civil society representatives, and peace activists from the relevant communities. The peaceful conduct of the election was hailed as a demonstration of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to maintain democratic continuity despite past losses.

Minister Khadija Mohamed Diiriye, who passed away in Djibouti in December 2023, and MP Seeseey, who died in March 2023, both held prominent roles in the House of the People. Their seats had remained vacant until the Speaker recently called for an urgent by-election to fill the posts.
