Dangerous Heat Wave Forecast for July 4 Holiday

A dangerous heat wave is affecting over two dozen states across the Midwest, South, and East Coast, bringing prolonged extreme heat.

The heat wave began in the Midwest on Monday and has since spread east, where it’s expected to last until the Fourth of July weekend.

Amtrak has canceled over two dozen trains in the Northeast due to the heat.

The heat index reached 110 degrees in Philadelphia and 111 in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

New York City Heat Emergency Activated

New York City activated its heat emergency plan and opened hundreds of cooling centers after the heat index topped 106 degrees on Thursday.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul urged residents to conserve power due to increased energy demand.

Heat Wave Continues in the Northeast

The heat wave is expected to persist in the Northeast on Friday, with heat indices ranging from 104 to 113 degrees in major cities.

Limited relief is provided overnight, making the heat even more dangerous.

The Fourth of July weekend will still feel like the triple digits, with heat indices of 102 and 108 in New York and D.C., respectively.

By Sunday and Monday, the heat and humidity will settle over the Southeast.

Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the US. At least 13,000 Americans have died from heat-related causes since 2018.
