Mogadishu (HOL) – A fire broke out Monday evening in the medicine section of Bakara Market, located in the Howlwadaag district of the Banadir region, damaging a commercial building before being controlled by emergency services.

According to a statement from Abdiaziz Godax Bare, Director of the Emergency and Fire Department of Banadir Regional Administration, the blaze erupted at approximately 6:32 PM and affected a six-room building that housed various pharmaceutical businesses.

The Banadir Fire Department responded swiftly, deploying 38 personnel who prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. Their efforts protected four nearby buildings among 21 commercial medical, blood testing, and electronics establishments.

While no casualties have been reported, videos and images circulated on social media showed extensive smoke and fire at the scene. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but such incidents are frequent during stormy periods, with Bakara Market being especially vulnerable due to its dense structure and limited fire safety infrastructure.

The Banadir Regional Administration commended the quick response of its emergency services and reiterated the need for stronger fire prevention measures in the market.
