Blue Origin Steps Up Moon Mission Cleanup After Explosion

Blue Origin Responds to New Glenn Explosion with Extensive Cleanup Efforts

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Blue Origin’s response to the explosion of its New Glenn rocket at Launch Complex 36A in late May, stating that the company’s efforts are ‘almost beyond impressive.’ Officials from the US Space Force have also been involved in the planning and work following an anomaly during a test firing.

Impact on Lunar Missions

NASA has a significant stake in Blue Origin’s return to flight, relying on the company’s Mk. 1 and Mk. 2 landers for future Moon missions. The New Glenn rocket was expected to play a crucial role in launching both landers.

Return-to-Flight Timeline

Blue Origin aims to rebuild Launch Complex 36A, complete the anomaly investigation, and launch New Glenn before the end of the year. However, some NASA officials and independent observers suggest a more realistic timeline of 12-18 months.

Preferred Mission Plan

Isaacman emphasized that NASA prefers the Endurance mission, carrying two science and technology payloads, to launch on New Glenn. The mission was originally scheduled for later this year.
