Mogadishu (HOL) – The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in collaboration with the Somali Police Force and the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), conducted a joint security operation on Friday targeting an Al-Shabaab hideout in the Muuri area.

The operation, aimed at neutralizing threats posed by Al-Shabaab militants, resulted in the seizure of weapons linked to recent attacks in the area and the arrest of several suspects believed to be connected to the group.

“This joint effort strengthens AUSSOM’s mandate and helps to transition security responsibilities to Somali army forces,” AUSSOM stated in a press release.

The mission, which officially replaced the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in January 2025, is tasked with gradually handing over security responsibilities to Somalia’s national security forces. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) endorsed the transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM on December 27, 2024, as part of a strategy to bolster Somalia’s self-reliance in maintaining national security.
