    Activists in Kenya protest detention of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye

    Human rights activists Monday took to the streets of downtown Nairobi, Kenya, where they were protesting for the release of detained Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye who was recently charged by the magistrates’ court. 

    Besigye was charged with treason and the concealment of treason, in what the court said were efforts to overthrow the government. Besigye and his aide Oben Lutale were “kidnapped” in November 2024, in Nairobi, and returned to Uganda, where they were charged with multiple offenses, including possession of illegal weapons and treason in a military court, according to the opposition leader’s lawyer, Erias Lukwago.
