With Sunday's presidential vote less than a week away, speculation that far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro may strip Brazil's patron saint of her title has ignited a national crisis, potentially tipping the razor-thin race in favour of incumbent Lula da Silva.
The Bolsonaro Claim and the Catholic Backlash
Flávio Bolsonaro told a recent broadcast that one of his first acts as president would be to 'decree that Brazil belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ', a remark interpreted by Catholics as an attempt to unseat Our Lady of Aparecida, the Vatican's 1930 patroness of the nation. Bolsonaro has dismissed the accusations as 'fake news', alleging they were spread by Lula supporters and the Episcopal Conference of Brazil, which formally rejected the charge.
The controversy was further fuelled by Bolsonaro's reported links to evangelical leader JB Carvalho, who has previously called for the removal of the patron saint. In 2007, another Bolsonaro ally attempted to introduce similar legislation, though the bill was ultimately dropped. The debate has exposed deep tensions between Brazil's Catholic Church and the evangelical movement, which has grown rapidly since the 1980s.
Lula's Counter-Offensive and the Catholic Vote
Lula has seized on the controversy, appearing on the campaign trail holding statuettes of the Virgin Mary while his wife, Janja da Silva, has worn a pendant honouring Our Lady of Aparecida. At a rally in the Amazon, Lula declared: 'As long as I'm president, no one will disrespect Our Lady of Aparecida. No one. People need to learn to respect all religions'. His running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, a devout Catholic, published a video assuring voters they would 'preserve and protect religious traditions, so sacred to Brazilian families'.
With nearly 57% of Brazil's population identifying as Catholic and the evangelical bloc making up about 30%, the election is expected to be even tighter than the previous contest, where Lula beat Jair Bolsonaro by less than 2%. Political analyst Thomas Traumann noted that the furore has tapped into 'a genuine fear among Catholics of being pushed outside the system', adding that Bolsonaro 'knows it has landed badly'.
A Symbol of Brazilian Identity
Historian Luiz Antônio Simas described the outcry as 'a symptom of the popularity that Aparecida and the Virgin Mary in general have in the formation of our culture'. He highlighted that Our Lady of Aparecida is a black representation of the Virgin Mary, noting how the 'Black Madonna' is present in samba parades, football culture and Afro-Brazilian faiths, making her a defining element of Brazilian popular culture.
The row recalls a major incident in 1995 when a neo-Pentecostal pastor kicked a statue of Our Lady of Aparecida on television, causing a significant public backlash. Simas warned that when religious tensions meet a turbulent political context, 'all these controversies come to the surface', underscoring the deep cultural and political stakes of the election.
