Mogadishu (HOL) – The United States military conducted an airstrike on March 29 targeting Islamic State (ISIS) militants in northern Somalia, killing multiple operatives, according to U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

The strike carried out in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, took place southeast of Bosaso in the Puntland region. While the exact number of casualties remains unspecified, AFRICOM said its initial assessment indicates that multiple ISIS-Somalia operatives were killed and no civilians were harmed.

“AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s ability to plan and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our civilians abroad,” the statement read.

ISIS-Somalia, an offshoot of the Islamic State group, has operated primarily in the rugged mountains of Puntland. Though smaller than Al-Shabaab, the group has been responsible for targeted assassinations and extortion, particularly in and around Bosaso.
