Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for an official visit, following an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
During the visit, the two leaders are set to discuss joint efforts to combat terrorism and enhance regional security and public order. Economic development, trade, and investment are also key agenda items, as both governments aim to expand opportunities for bilateral cooperation in these areas.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked President Al-Sisi for the invitation and Egypt’s continued support for Somalia, emphasizing the historic ties between the two nations.
“The relationship between Somalia and Egypt is built on brotherhood, strategic cooperation, and the common interests of our peoples,” the Somali government said.
Preliminary reports suggest that one of the focal points of their discussions will be the role of Egyptian troops in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the training of Somali armed forces.
The visit comes as Somalia seeks to balance its relations with regional allies, particularly Ethiopia and Egypt, regarding the AUSSOM mission.
Somalia recently restored full diplomatic ties with Ethiopia and is working to ensure a collaborative and balanced approach to regional security and stabilization efforts.
