Brazil's presidential debate was called off on Thursday after rulings from the electoral court and the Supreme Court created legal uncertainty, leaving President Lula and rival Flavio Bolsonaro to address voters separately ahead of Sunday's first-round vote.
Debate Called Off Amid Court Rulings
TV Globo, Brazil's most popular broadcaster, announced the cancellation of the presidential debate after two court rulings created legal uncertainty about the event. The debate was set for Thursday and would have offered the two frontrunners a final chance to face off before polls open on Sunday.
Lula, 80, chose to appear on a popular podcast with millions of YouTube subscribers instead of participating in the debate. His main opponent, Flavio Bolsonaro, accused the electoral court of censorship as a reason for his withdrawal from the event.
Bolsonaro Blames Electoral Court for Exclusion
Flavio Bolsonaro said during a live broadcast on Thursday that his decision not to participate was due to censorship imposed by the electoral court. He was referring to a ruling that barred the debate broadcaster from keeping President Lula's empty seat on stage.
The right-wing candidate's comments highlighted growing tensions between the judiciary and the political establishment as the election approaches. Polls give Lula a slight advantage in the first round, though the pair remain neck and neck in projections for a potential runoff on October 25.
Bomb Threat Ruled Out at Supreme Court
On the same day as the cancelled debate, Brazilian police ruled out a bomb threat outside the Supreme Court. A suspect who tried to jump the court's fences and threw a backpack on top of a bus stop was arrested and examined by authorities.
Military police spokesperson Raphael Broocke told AFP that the backpack contained only personal belongings. The suspect will remain in custody while the investigation continues, as the Supreme Court faces criticism from the political right over its role in the 2025 conviction of ex-leader Jair Bolsonaro.
