US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told ABC News on Sunday that a nuclear agreement with Iran may not come to fruition, suggesting the US is instead focused on dismantling Tehran's nuclear capabilities through military pressure.
Dismantling Iran's Nuclear Ambitions
Wright stated that the US is degrading Iran's capacity to develop nuclear weapons and ultimately deliver them, describing it as a 47-year-long effort that is not trivial but will be completed. He added that Iran's nuclear programme, navy, and air force are all coming to an end as the US continues to escalate operations.
When pressed on whether a deal might await a future Iranian administration, Wright said he simply does not know, noting that the US may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it. He emphasised that Iran does not have the capability to build more missiles and that the US will work in cooperation with allies in the region to achieve its objectives.
Trump's Indifference and Escalating Hostilities
President Trump reiterated his stance on social media, declaring he could not care less if Iran struck a deal, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration's goal was to economically asphyxiate Iran. Trump also stated that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and that building one after US strikes with B-2 bombers would take a long time.
Hostilities between the US and Iran appeared to ramp up again, with the US striking three Iranian oil tankers after Iran targeted two US Navy warships. Tehran then claimed to have launched retaliatory strikes on three US-affiliated vessels and three oil tankers, as the White House attempted to minimise the conflict in public remarks.
Oil Markets and Regional Impact
Wright reported that the seven-day average oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz is a little over nine million barrels a day, the highest the seven-day average has ever been. He noted that futures prices for bulk gasoline two months out in November are about 35 cents cheaper than today, suggesting the marketplace expects prices to move meaningfully lower.
The US blockade of Iranian ports would either change their regime or its policies, Wright said. He also highlighted the US leverage over Venezuela, where the control of oil sales outside the country is drawing billions in investment and transforming the region from conflict to commerce.
