Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the flydubai co-pilot who stabbed the captain on a flight to Tel Aviv had undergone Islamist radical indoctrination and was suicidal, as investigations continue into the attack that plunged the aircraft more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News that the co-pilot of flydubai flight FZ1073 had undergone Islamist radical indoctrination, drawing on personal information gathered during the investigation. He said the attacker was clearly suicidal and that the Islamist tendencies found in his background were a significant clue, though he stopped short of making final conclusions.
Netanyahu also said the co-pilot was being investigated in Saudi Arabia and he believed the man would be transferred to the UAE. When asked about possible Iranian involvement, Netanyahu said it was too early to say, adding that Israel would soon uncover whether the attacker had accomplices or whether Iran was behind the incident.
Captain's Quick Action Averted Disaster on Flight FZ1073
The captain of flydubai flight FZ1073, Indian national Smit Machchhar, managed to unlock the cockpit door after being stabbed by the co-pilot, allowing passengers to subdue the attacker. A reserve crew that had been aboard then landed the aircraft at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia, saving more than 170 people on board from what could have been a catastrophic crash.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the plane plunged more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds as it flew over Saudi Arabia on its journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have both hailed Captain Machchhar as a hero for his quick thinking and bravery during the incident.
UAE Launches Investigation; Flydubai Suspends Israel Routes
The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation into the circumstances and motives behind the attack, seeking to determine whether the incident was linked to any terrorist activity or involved prior planning or direction. Israeli intelligence services Mossad and Shin Bet are also investigating, though officials say no Iranian involvement has been identified so far.
Flydubai has suspended all flights to and from Israel following the incident, while Netanyahu told CBS that Israel plans to fly home anyone stranded in Dubai as a result. The attack has heightened security fears in Israel weeks before the country's first election since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks.
