A ballistic missile fired at the Medina region was intercepted on Thursday, according to a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthi rebels. The announcement came minutes after a civil defence warning of potential danger near the port of Yanbu.
Coalition spokesman reports interception over Medina region
The Saudi-led coalition said the missile was fired by the Houthi group toward the Medina region. In a post on X, coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said: "Air defence intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the Medina region." The Houthis have repeatedly said their forces would not target the holy cities of Mecca or Medina in their campaign against the kingdom.
Warning issued for potential danger near Yanbu
The interception announcement came just minutes after the kingdom's civil defence agency warned of potential danger in the area near the strategic port of Yanbu. According to a statement the agency published online, the National Early Warning Platform in Yanbu Governorate issued the warning. It was unclear whether the two events were connected.
Yanbu port and pipeline remain central to Saudi oil exports
The Houthis have repeatedly targeted the port of Yanbu in recent months. Yanbu, on the Red Sea, is the terminus of the East-West Pipeline, which allows Saudi oil to bypass the blockaded Strait of Hormuz. The port and pipeline have played a key role since the outbreak of the Middle East war, helping Riyadh ship crude and fuel to global markets.
