Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has proposed a deal to the United States that would reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz within seven days, but President Donald Trump has rejected the offer and renamed the waterway on his Truth Social platform.
Iran's Seven-Day Peace Plan
Iran has outlined a plan calling for a seven-day ceasefire across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, before reopening the Strait of Hormuz on the seventh day. The proposal was delivered to Washington through Qatar and revisits key elements of the memorandum of understanding signed in June.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the choice now rests with the United States, adding that the deal could be implemented if necessary conditions are met. Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian told CBS that the process would begin from the very day the US accepts the proposal.
Trump Rejects Deal and Renames Strait
President Donald Trump rejected the Iranian proposal within hours of its announcement, expressing scepticism that Tehran would meet US demands and warning that a renewed bombing campaign was likely. He posted an image on Truth Social showing a map of the Strait of Hormuz circled and labelled 'Trump Strait'.
Hossein Mohebi, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard, responded by saying Iran would not cease punishing the US until its seven conditions are met. The standoff reflects ongoing tensions since the June MOU collapsed after Iran fired on commercial ships accused of deviating from approved routes.
Background to the June MOU Collapse
The memorandum of understanding signed in June called for the release of frozen Iranian assets worth at least $US12 billion ($17 billion), the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade. However, the deal broke down shortly after when Iran began targeting commercial vessels in the strait.
Iran now requires ships to obtain authorisation before passage, citing security and sovereignty reasons. Ships that refuse to comply are regularly targeted, while the US sporadically bombs Iranian coastal areas in retaliation, leaving the strait largely under Iranian control.
