Yemen's Houthi rebels captured the strategic Red Sea city of Mocha on Thursday, marking their largest territorial advance since the 2022 truce. Government forces withdrew from the port and the nearby island of Perim, while the Houthis also took the mainland coastal town of Dhubab.
Houthi Advance and Government Withdrawal
The Ansar Allah Houthis took control of Mocha after government forces attempted to resist but were overwhelmed by military pressure. Tariq Saleh, a member of the internationally recognised Presidential Leadership Council, described the pullback as a tactical withdrawal to regroup forces on the western coast.
The Houthis are now advancing south toward Dhubab, located closer to the narrowest point of the Bab al-Mandeb strait. Government commanders in Taiz and along the western coast have pledged to prevent further Houthi expansion and are attempting to retake the city.
Iran's Role and Regional Implications
Iran provided arms, advice, and guidance to the Houthis for the operation, with senior Revolutionary Guards commanders sent to Yemen to oversee attacks. Iran told the Houthis to escalate attacks on Saudi Arabia and promised additional funding, weapons, and officers to support the effort.
Analysts say the seizure of Mocha enables the Houthis to control most of Yemen's Red Sea coast and potentially disrupt international shipping without needing missiles or drones. The Strait of Hormuz is about 34 kilometres wide at its narrowest, compared with roughly 29 kilometres for Bab al-Mandeb.
International Response and Escalation Risks
The UN Security Council held an emergency session on Yemen, called by Bahrain and the UK, after Houthi strikes wounded 73 civilians in Saudi Arabia. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg warned that Yemen faces its gravest risk of full-scale war since the 2022 truce.
Saudi Arabia temporarily closed the East-West oil pipeline near Riyadh and Medina after it came under attack. Pakistan warned Iran to restrain the Houthis, noting its defence pact with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye could become operational if attacks on Saudi territory persist.
