A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) in central Kyiv on Friday afternoon, targeting the office of the agency's head. The attack, which occurred during a tenth consecutive day of Russian air raids on the capital, has prompted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to order a tangible response.
The Strike and Immediate Aftermath
Witnesses reported hearing an explosion at around 3.30 pm local time, with thick smoke rising from the area around the Golden Gate in the historic centre. The SBU headquarters is located on Volodymyrska Street, opposite St Sophia Cathedral and close to Kyiv's Golden Gate area.
Numerous ambulances and emergency services were heading to the scene in the historic part of the city close to the Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The owner of a popular bakery, Zavertailo, said their building located opposite the SBU building was also destroyed in the attack.
Ukraine Vows a Tangible Response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he instructed the Security Service to deliver an appropriate, tangible response and, where possible, one that mirrors this strike. He also said he had instructed Poklad to prepare a response to the attack.
Zelenskyy said emergency services were attending the scene and there was no immediate information on casualties. At least seven people were injured in the attack, though Kyiv says 12 people were injured in the attack.
A Major Escalation in the Conflict
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as a major escalation and a rejection of diplomacy. He said Moscow launched this strike during a renewed push for peace, laying bare its true rejection of diplomacy.
During more than four-and-a-half years of war with Russia, Ukrainian government buildings have rarely been damaged in drone and missile strikes. The attack came during another air-raid alert in Kyiv, with Ukraine's air force warning that several drones were heading towards the city.
