The United States has dispatched a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, adding up to 10,000 troops to a region already hosting roughly 50,000 service members as the conflict with Iran enters its eighth month and diplomatic efforts remain stalled.
A Surge of Naval Power
The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group departed its San Diego base on Sunday, followed by the Makin Island Marine Expeditionary Unit carrying more than 2,000 Marines. Together, these deployments could bring an additional 9,000 to 10,000 US troops to the region by the end of November, including sailors and Marines assigned to the carrier strike group and other ships.
The new force includes F-35 fighter jets and will position three aircraft carriers and two amphibious landing groups near Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has stated that forces are ready to go should President Trump order new attacks, while the Pentagon is not planning to withdraw any assets even if an agreement with Iran is reached.
A Broader Military Footprint
The US already operates from a broad network of military sites across at least 19 locations in the region, including eight permanent bases in Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. As of mid-2025, there were 40,000 to 50,000 US soldiers stationed around the Middle East, comprising personnel in both large permanent bases and smaller forward sites.
Since early February, the US has deployed more than 120 aircraft to the region, the biggest surge in US airpower since the 2003 Iraq War. In March, the Pentagon ordered additional forces to the Gulf, including the Tripoli and Boxer Amphibious Ready Groups and about 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, bringing nearly 7,000 additional troops since the war began.
Diplomacy Stalled Amid Escalation
Indirect peace talks between the US and Iran via mediators have continued without breakthroughs. Last week, Iran sent a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, subject to conditions including the lifting of sanctions and unfreezing Iranian assets, but the Trump administration rejected the proposal, saying it wants other issues such as Iran's nuclear programme discussed first.
Trump warned Iran that the current confrontation will end very soon, threatening severe consequences if Tehran fails to reach a deal. Speaking at a Peterbilt Motors plant in Denton, Texas, he said Iran will either do something very proper and smart, or they won't be around very long, while also questioning whether Iran can be trusted to honour any agreement.
