The escalation of conflict across the Middle East since February has left at least 52 million school-age children unable to access safe, consistent learning, with Lebanon bearing a particularly heavy toll as schools are damaged and families displaced.
Lebanon Faces Severe School Damage and Displacement
In Lebanon alone, the latest round of fighting has caused widespread destruction to the education infrastructure, with 340 schools damaged and 17 completely destroyed. This devastation has forced approximately 165,000 children into remote learning arrangements because their schools have been damaged, repurposed as shelters, or located in active conflict zones.
The situation is critical as the new school year approaches, with at least 100,000 children now at risk of not returning to classrooms next month. Years of crisis have already disrupted the education system, and the recent escalation has created even more barriers to learning for Lebanese children.
Refugee Children Struggle in Northern Settlements
Thousands of Syrian refugees living in tents across hundreds of informal settlements in the remote Akkar region face even greater challenges. Families who fled violence in Syria have lived in these conditions for years, with children struggling to access basic services and maintain the routines necessary for learning.
Sara, a young refugee girl, balances household duties with her studies, using a mobile phone to complete homework and send it to her teacher. Despite the difficulties, she expresses a clear desire to learn and dreams of becoming a French teacher when she grows up.
Urgent Funding Needed to Restore Education
War Child is launching a new education programme in northern Lebanon to support the Ministry of Education, establishing learning hubs and introducing digital learning alongside mental health support and play-based activities for children and caregivers.
However, the scale of need far exceeds current resources, with Lebanon's emergency education response still requiring an estimated £7 million in funding. Sustained investment beyond this school year is essential to help children recover lost learning and rebuild their futures.
