The British government will deploy one Royal Air Force Voyager tanker aircraft to facilitate this operation in the coming days, though no specific timetable has been set by the Ministry of Defence.
Burnham described the arrangement as time-limited and subject to ongoing review, stating that the UK is acting to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region by keeping vital oil export routes open. The Ministry of Defence added that the decision builds on existing military contributions, including air defence equipment and personnel deployed to protect Saudi Arabia against missile and drone attacks.

The Saudi-Houthi conflict, which resumed after a 2022 UN-mediated ceasefire collapsed amid the wider US-Israel war on Iran, has seen particularly heavy fighting in recent weeks. The Houthis advanced to the Red Sea coast, capturing the strategic port city of Mocha and Mayyun Island in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, while also targeting Riyadh and Saudi oil infrastructure, including a section of the East-West Pipeline.
The Houthis have declared a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea, through which approximately 12 percent of global trade passes.
