New MLS Commissioner in the Works: 3 Finalists Emerge

The search for a successor to current MLS Commissioner Don Garber is nearing its conclusion, with three prominent figures emerging as finalists.

LAFC co-owner Larry Berg, 49ers Enterprises president Paraag Marathe, and former Fox executive David Nathanson are the names in the hat, according to ESPN.

Garber, who has led the league since 1999, has overseen its remarkable growth, expanding from 12 to 30 teams and boosting valuations to an average of $731 million.

The MLS Board of Governors has been working on a succession plan, and Korn Ferry was brought in to lead the recruitment process. Despite speculation, no formal announcement is expected during the All-Star Game in Charlotte on July 29.

Each candidate brings diverse experience to the table. Berg has been involved with LAFC since its inception, while Marathe has served as chairman of Leeds United after the 49ers invested in the English Premier League club.

Nathanson, meanwhile, has a background in television, having worked at Fox for eight years. He is also involved with several other sports organizations, including the US Soccer Foundation and NWSL team Angel City FC.

The new commissioner will face significant challenges. The league’s TV deal with Apple ends in 2029, while the collective bargaining agreement with the MLS Players Association expires in 2028.
