Somalia receives Turkish support to modernise Agriculture Ministry
Mogadishu — Somalia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has received a consignment of modern office equipment from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) as part of efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and improve public service delivery. The handover, which took place on Sunday in Mogadishu, included computers, printers and television screens to be installed in the ministry’s new headquarters. Officials said the equipment is intended to support administrative efficiency and help modernise the ministry’s day-to-day operations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir Mareye said the support would contribute to improving government services and advancing Somalia’s long-term goal of achieving greater food self-sufficiency. “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to TIKA, the development agency of our brotherly nation, the Republic of Türkiye, for delivering today the first phase of their response,” Mr Mareye said. The minister said the request for assistance had been presented to TIKA President Abdullah Eren during a meeting in Ankara in 2025.
“We deeply value this partnership and look forward to continued cooperation with our Turkish friends,” he added. Türkiye has remained one of Somalia’s key development partners over the past decade, supporting projects across sectors including healthcare, education, municipal services and infrastructure. According to Somali officials, Turkish humanitarian and technical assistance to the country has exceeded $1bn.
