Somali President Hosts Italian Investors in Push to Strengthen Economic Ties
Mogadishu — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hosted a delegation of Italian business leaders and investors at the presidential palace in Mogadishu on Sunday, as Somalia seeks to expand foreign investment and deepen economic cooperation with Italy. The visit coincided with a conference focused on Somali–Italian trade and investment cooperation, bringing together executives from major companies, industrial groups and investors exploring opportunities in Somalia’s developing economy. Italy’s ambassador to Somalia also attended the meeting, where discussions centred on strengthening bilateral economic relations and increasing commercial engagement between the two countries.
President Hassan Sheikh said Somalia was undergoing a period of transformation, highlighting improvements in security, economic recovery efforts and initiatives aimed at creating a more favourable environment for international investment. He invited Italian investors to explore opportunities across several sectors of the Somali economy, including infrastructure, energy, fisheries, agriculture, manufacturing and social services. Members of the Italian delegation welcomed the opportunity to meet with Somali officials and said they saw potential in Somalia’s emerging market and ongoing development initiatives.
Somalia has stepped up efforts in recent years to attract foreign investment as part of a broader strategy to rebuild its economy and strengthen international economic partnerships following decades of conflict and instability.
