India Debuts Hydrogen-Powered Train as Part of Sustainability Drive
India has made history by unveiling its first domestically built, hydrogen-powered train, a significant stride in its journey towards sustainable transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the locomotive on Friday, expressing his vision of an independent and environmentally conscious nation.
Green Rail for the Future
The newly christened “NaMo Green Rail” will operate along a 90km route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, with two round trips daily. Seating capacity for the 10-coach train is approximately 2,600 passengers, and it can reach speeds of up to 75km/h. Notably, the NaMo emits only heat and water vapour during operation, making it a cleaner alternative to diesel-powered trains.
Bridging the Electrification Gap
While India has extensively electrified its vast railway network, certain areas remain beyond electrification. Hydrogen-powered trains offer a viable solution in such scenarios, complementing the existing infrastructure.
Global Leadership in Green Technology
India joins a select group of nations that have successfully deployed hydrogen-powered trains, alongside Japan, China, the United States, and Germany. This rollout aligns with India’s ambitious goals of expanding hydrogen use and achieving net-zero carbon emissions from its railways by 2030.
