Pakistan's national average prices for key staple foods, including wheat flour, edible oils, and pulses, remain elevated at 14 percent above pre-Middle East conflict levels as of 17 September, according to a new World Food Programme market report.
Staple Food Prices Hold Steady Amid Regional Turbulence
National average prices of key staple foods (wheat flour, edible oils, and pulses) remained elevated and are 14 percent above pre-Middle East conflict levels, as of 17 September, reflecting a combination of domestic market factors and higher fuel and import costs.
Wheat flour prices declined marginally during the week ended on 17 September, indicating short-term market stability, however, prices remain 18 percent above pre-conflict levels.
Rising Fuel Costs Amplify Supply Chain Pressures
Domestic fuel prices remain a key transmission channel of regional market pressures. As of 25 September, petrol and HSD prices were 50 percent and 49 percent higher, respectively, than their pre-conflict levels, continuing to elevate transportation, food distribution, and other supply-chain costs.
The surge in fuel costs is expected to persist, further straining the affordability of essential goods for Pakistani households and complicating efforts to stabilize the broader food economy.
Household Food Basket Costs Continue to Rise
The cost of the basic food basket for a six-member household stood at PKR 17,212 per month (USD 62), equivalent to PKR 4,303 per week (USD 15.5) nationwide, excluding lower cost items such as vegetables or spices.
These figures underscore the ongoing economic challenges facing Pakistani families, particularly in light of the sustained price increases driven by regional instability and elevated import costs.
