Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States accepts Tehran's seven-day plan to reopen the waterway. Iranian officials stated their position is clear and definite, warning that the era of dictating unilateral demands is over.
Diplomatic Stance and Military Readiness
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that Tehran is serious about finding diplomatic solutions just as it is serious about defending itself. Speaking to foreign ambassadors in Tehran, Araghchi noted that Washington made some proposals through a mediator days after the US replied to Iran's diplomatic proposal. However, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei added that the US should know that the era of wasting time and dictating unilateral demands is over.
Baghaei stated that Tehran used the United Nations General Assembly platform last month to provide world leaders with its position on ending the US-Israel war on Iran. He explained that while the US has continued to focus on nuclear talks, reopening the strait has been Iran's main goal. The Iranian leadership remains focused on reaching a solution to restore peace and stability within the waterway.
Context of Maritime Disruption
The Strait of Hormuz has been largely blocked and disrupted for more than seven months, a situation that began after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. This conflict has driven one of the worst maritime shipping disruptions in decades, affecting a critical global artery. During peacetime, one-fifth of global oil and natural gas is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the strategic importance of the region.
Iran's top negotiator and parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, reported that Iran is present on the military battlefield and will confront adversaries with new surprises. He asserted that Iran was neither excited nor intimidated by the latest US proposals and would both fight and negotiate. Ghalibaf reiterated that the strait will not open until the seven conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum are met.
