President Masoud Pezeshkian told Al Jazeera that Iran has lost faith in negotiations with Washington, citing a pattern of talks followed by military strikes and renewed sanctions. Tehran is now awaiting a response to its latest proposal to end the conflict within seven days.
A Proposal for a Seven-Day Ceasefire
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited the United States this week for the UN General Assembly and presented a plan to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Under the proposal, Washington would lift its naval blockade, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales, release an estimated $12bn in frozen assets, and observe a ceasefire covering Lebanon and Yemen.
In return, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which a fifth of the world's traded oil and gas passed before the war. Mediators Qatar and Pakistan are currently conveying Iran's messages to Washington, building on a memorandum of understanding reached in June that lapsed last month.
Iran Denies Responsibility for Blocking the Strait
Pezeshkian rejected claims that Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, stating the US 'closed the routes before us' and calling the closure 'a natural response when routes are cut off to Iran.' He accused the United States and Israel of being the aggressors, asserting that Iran 'has not attacked any country in 200 years' and that the US and Israel dragged regional countries into the war.
The president linked the sanctions imposed on Iran to the tactics used by Israel in its war against Palestinians in Gaza, saying 'Those who deny Iranians medicine and raw materials are the same people who cut off food and water from Gaza.' He also denied that the actions of the Houthis in Yemen were connected to Iran.
Domestic Unity and the Path Forward
On domestic politics, Pezeshkian accused Iran's 'enemies' of trying to stir disagreements among officials, insisting the country is witnessing 'unprecedented unity and cohesion.' He said he had met twice with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, including one meeting that lasted seven hours, and pledged to overcome 'accumulated imbalances in Iran's internal conditions.'
The president said the US and Israel want to stop Iran from becoming self-reliant, but insisted 'We will invest in our people.' He also said regional security could be achieved through cooperation among the region's own countries, adding 'We do not need a regional policeman' and 'We will not be warmongers.'
