South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has warned Kyiv that additional diplomatic steps will follow unless Ukraine issues a public apology for revealing the transfer of two North Korean soldiers captured while fighting for Russia.
Seoul Demands Apology and Warns of Consequences
President Lee Jae Myung expressed deep regret hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed the transfer of two North Korean POWs at the United Nations last week. Seoul now insists that Kyiv violated a confidentiality agreement designed to protect the soldiers, and Lee has accused Ukraine of portraying him as a liar.
In a post on X, Lee stated: 'If the refusal to acknowledge the facts and issue a public apology continues, we will take additional measures.' He further warned that Pyongyang could retaliate by targeting the families of the two soldiers now in South Korea.
Kyiv Denies Agreement and Frames It as a Misunderstanding
Ukrainian officials have firmly denied that any binding agreement existed to keep the soldiers' transfer confidential. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told journalists that Kyiv is actively seeking to repair relations with Seoul and described the situation as a diplomatic misunderstanding rather than a serious incident.
Sybiha emphasized the importance of the bilateral relationship, saying: 'South Korea is an important country for us. And I very much hope for momentum, continued cooperation, and concrete results that we are indeed achieving with them.'
Diplomatic Tensions Rise Amid POW Controversy
The dispute has created a rift between Seoul and Kyiv, with South Korea demanding a formal apology while Ukraine maintains its disclosure was a matter of public interest. Both sides have issued statements, but no resolution has been reached as of Friday.
The two North Korean soldiers were captured while serving in Russia's military and were subsequently transferred to South Korea, a move that Seoul claims was meant to be handled discreetly to ensure their safety.
