NRC Endorses Science Behind Nuclear Regulations, But Critics Remain Skeptical

New NRC Rules Aim to Clarify Radiation Exposure Regulations

The Trump administration’s push to restart construction of nuclear power plants in the US has coincided with complaints about existing regulations being perceived as barriers to industry growth. In response, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently proposed new rules that aim to clarify and streamline the regulation of radiation exposure.

Clarity, Not Savings

The proposed rules endorse the science behind the NRC’s current regulations but suggest that difficulties arise from the language used. Instead, they endorse standards that achieve the same goals without employing certain previously utilized terminology.

Linear Non-Threshold (LNT) Controversy

Two central technical abbreviations in US nuclear regulations are LNT and ALARA. LNT refers to the debate over whether any level of radiation is completely harmless, known as the “threshold,” and whether its effects are linearly proportional to the dose. While biology supports the non-threshold concept, demonstrating it in the real world poses challenges due to multiple sources of radiation exposure.
