Uganda Suspends School Trips After Fatal Bus Crash

Kapchorwa, Uganda – Uganda’s government has temporarily suspended all school trips following a deadly bus crash that claimed the lives of at least 20 pupils and one adult on Thursday evening.

The accident occurred on Chekwatit Hill in Kapchorwa district, eastern Uganda, involving a bus carrying students from King David Junior School in Ndejje. Initial reports suggest the bus suffered a mechanical failure before the driver lost control.

“As an immediate precautionary measure, we must do something about the safety of our children,” Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo declared, announcing the suspension of all school trips until a full investigation is completed.

Bus Overturns, Fatalities Confirmed

The bus veered off the road, striking a large stone and overturning. Local Government Minister Balaam Ateenyi Barugahara confirmed the tragic loss of both pupils and the school’s founder and director.

Videos captured the extent of the damage to the bus and the frantic efforts of locals to aid the injured. The pupils were returning from a study tour to the Sipi Falls tourist area.

Concerns Rise Over School Transport Safety

The incident highlights concerns surrounding school transport safety in Uganda. The country records thousands of road deaths annually, with speeding, poorly maintained vehicles, and dangerous roads frequently cited as contributing factors.

Recent weeks have witnessed several serious bus accidents in the country, reigniting debates about the adequacy of measures to protect young passengers.
