Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo II is set to be crowned king of Uganda's Tooro kingdom, ending a bitter succession dispute after the death of the late King Oyo, who ruled for 31 years since ascending the throne as a child.
A Controversial Succession
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended to the throne in 1995 at the age of three, died last month from cancer at just 34 years old. According to tradition, a recognised son of the late king should succeed him, and close family members say Oyo left a young son and a will instructing that the child should be next on the throne.
However, the son has never been revealed to the public and was not recognised by the committee of 21 Babiito clan members who selected Kijanangoma instead. Queen Best Kemigisa argued that the late king's will ought to have been respected, but the committee insisted their selection process was conducted in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions.
The New King's Background
Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo II, 56, was long known to Ugandans not as a royal heir but as a broadcaster and editor at the state broadcaster. He graduated with a mass communication degree from Makerere University in 1999 and worked as a broadcaster for more than two decades, including in neighbouring Rwanda and with the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
After he was formally announced, Kijanangoma promised that the palace would be open to the people, while vowing to focus on unity and development. He said he would use the connections he had built up over 21 years working as a journalist to get good things for the people of Tooro.
Government Backing and Royal Tensions
Amid the succession dispute, the government backed the Babiito clan's choice of Kijanangoma. Attorney General Sam Mayanja said the Tooro kingdom was cleared to go ahead with the coronation, as there had not been a formal complaint against him, and President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to attend.
Queen Best Kemigisa referred to Kijanangoma's selection as the 'announcement of a second king' being 'made after the will of King Oyo was read to members of the royal family'. She said Oyo's son, who was in the US state of Texas, had been due to return home but that could not happen amid a 'tense and polarised succession dispute'.
