Universities across Africa gathered in Dar es Salaam on Friday to strengthen research partnerships and prepare graduates for an economy reshaped by artificial intelligence, with 12 institutions from ten countries committing to closer collaboration.
AAP Meeting Focuses on AI and Graduate Readiness
The annual meeting of the Alliance for Africa Partnership (AAP), anchored by Michigan State University, brought together 12 institutions across ten African countries to discuss the future of research and innovation. Professor Nelson Boniface, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Dar es Salaam, said the gathering provided a platform to exchange experiences and strengthen partnerships as universities focus on artificial intelligence.
Prof Boniface warned that AI is for everyone, noting that while some code and programme, everyone is a user and those who do not know how to use AI may be left behind. He called for universities to update curricula, train lecturers and equip students to use emerging technologies effectively so graduates can work in an economy being reshaped by AI.
Call for Industry-Academia Collaboration and Research Investment
Prof Boniface emphasised that closer cooperation between academia, governments and other institutions is needed so graduates leave universities with skills that solve real-world problems. He argued that companies, banks and other institutions should work with universities to develop research and solutions rather than operating independently, and that countries cannot move forward without significant investment in research.
The meeting also examined brain circulation, the exchange of expertise and talent across countries, with Prof Boniface saying African institutions can share experiences while adapting them to their different economic and educational environments. He added that partnerships are essential to addressing Africa's social and economic challenges.
MSU's Dr McIntyre Stresses Practical Knowledge and Partnership Power
Michigan State University Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr Laura McIntyre, said partnerships are essential to addressing Africa's social and economic challenges and that universities must prepare students for the future of work by connecting academic knowledge with practical experience. She said it is not just about the knowledge being taught but about creating opportunities to translate the knowledge into action.
Dr McIntyre added that institutions of higher education play a critical role and that it is really the power of people coming together to solve real-world problems. She called for strengthening relationships so that students and graduates are productive and can directly bring change and solve issues facing society when they leave university.
