Kenyan President William Ruto told the UN General Assembly that the organisation's proclaimed sovereign equality is contradicted by its own structures, calling for Security Council reform and a fairer global financial system.
A House Divided
Mr. Ruto said every nation holds one vote in the General Assembly, yet five permanent members exercise unchecked power over war and peace that the other 188 members do not share. He warned that confidence in the consistent application of international law is weakening worldwide.
He noted that 65 State-based armed conflicts were recorded last year, 13 of them full-blown wars, with nearly a quarter of a million people killed in organised violence. He said disputes are increasingly being frozen, deferred or decided by force.
Debt and Discrimination
Turning to finance, Mr. Ruto said global public debt reached a record $102 trillion in 2024, and 46 developing countries now spend more on interest than on classrooms and medicine. He said the hospital competes with a creditor and the classroom competes with debt service.
Citing a UNDP estimate that subjectivity in credit ratings has cost African countries some $75 billion, he said developing countries borrow at rates two to four times higher than developed ones. He declared that capital must price risk, not prejudice.
A Proposal, Not a Plea
Mr. Ruto said Africa does not come to plead but with a proposal, pointing to the continent's minerals, renewable energy and youthful population. He highlighted Kenya's planned $16 billion refinery in Lamu, capable of producing 700,000 barrels of oil a day.
He said this is not a plea for special treatment but a proposition for shared prosperity, emphasising that a more industrialised, food-secure and self-financing Africa can be a stronger partner to the world.
