Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen's Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council and Supreme Commander of the Yemeni Armed Forces, has called for a general national mobilization to rally citizens around government forces in a bid to reclaim territory held by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
Al-Alimi Urges Citizens to Join Government Forces
In a televised address on Friday, al-Alimi appealed to the sons of Yemen's people to engage in a general and national mobilization, urging them to rally around their armed and security forces. He stated that the state does not view residents of Houthi-controlled areas as parties to the conflict, but rather as its people and partners.
The Supreme Commander emphasized that the objective of this mobilization is to restore state institutions and extend sovereignty over the entire national territory, including the capital of Sanaa, which has been under Houthi control since 2014. He also announced that anyone who defects from the Houthis to the government will be pardoned in an upcoming amnesty.
Houthis Seize Red Sea Coast and Escalate Attacks on Saudi Arabia
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have seized control of Yemen's entire Red Sea coast in a lightning offensive, allowing them to fully control the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait and igniting global fears about shipping through the chokepoint. They have also intensified their missile and drone attacks on neighboring Saudi Arabia, marking a major escalation in the conflict.
The Houthis declared a maritime blockade and attacked Saudi targets in an attempt to stifle Saudi oil exports, while accusing the kingdom of besieging Yemeni areas under their control. They attacked Riyadh for the first time in years over the weekend, further intensifying the regional tensions that have been simmering since a 2022 truce left the conflict largely frozen.
Al-Alimi Warns Against Sending Children to Fight
In his address, al-Alimi specifically addressed residents of Houthi-controlled areas, urging them to protect their children and not send them to fight alongside the Houthis. He stressed that the state views these families as partners rather than combatants in the ongoing conflict.
The call for mobilization comes as fighting has recently flared up again amid the wider conflict involving Iran, with the Houthis continuing to challenge the Saudi-backed government's authority across Yemen's territory.
