Yemen's Saudi-backed government announced a major military operation on Sunday to retake territory from Iran-backed Houthis, coinciding with reports that rebel forces have cut a vital supply route to the besieged city of Taiz.
President Announces Operation to Retake Territory
The head of Yemen's presidential council, Rashad al-Alimi, declared the start of new military operations aimed at reclaiming all areas held by Houthi fighters. In a statement, al-Alimi said, 'I announce today the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory.' He further called on armed forces and security units to execute their assigned missions until the country is liberated from the grip of the Houthi terrorist militia.
This announcement marks the latest escalation in the conflict following a rapid offensive by the Houthis last month, during which the group seized large swaths of the Red Sea coastline. The move comes as fighting intensifies across the nation, with the government seeking to reverse recent territorial losses.
Houthis Isolate Taiz and Halt Traffic to Aden
Security sources told AFP that Houthi forces effectively encircled the government-held city of Taiz after cutting the main supply route. Three sources with the Yemeni military confirmed that the group controls the area and has halted traffic on the main road linking Taiz to Aden, with ongoing fighting in the region. Although the city remains under government control, it has long been besieged from the north, east, and west.
Farea Al-Muslimi, a research fellow at the Chatham House think-tank, noted that while the Houthis have not fully taken control of Taiz, they have achieved the military objective of isolating it from Aden. The advance follows days of heavy fighting in and around the city between the group and government forces.
