South Africa's police confirmed on Sunday that at least 27 people were killed in two separate mass shootings on Saturday night, one in a Johannesburg township and another at a Cape Town venue, as the country faces one of the world's highest murder rates.
Deadliest Attack in Johannesburg Township
Eight suspects armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire at a bar in Wedela township, about 50 miles south-west of central Johannesburg, killing 17 people and injuring at least 15 others. Police said patrons were drinking inside and outside the tavern when the suspects arrived and began shooting at those outside before entering and continuing to fire at patrons inside.
The suspects allegedly searched some patrons and took their cellphones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified motor vehicles, which were also set alight during the incident. Gauteng province's police commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, suggested the shooting could have been part of a turf war linked to illegal mining by zama zamas, and also said it might have been retaliation for another attack at the same tavern about a month ago.
Cape Town Shooting at Shisanyama Venue
In a separate attack, gunmen entered an entertainment venue selling grilled meat, known as shisanyama, in Lwandle near Cape Town at about 1:46 AM on Sunday and started shooting at customers, killing 10 people and wounding 11 others. Five individuals died on the scene while five others succumbed to injuries sustained after being transported to medical facilities.
Western Cape police said detectives were hard at work searching for the perpetrators, with no arrests made yet. A police official suggested that business jealousy might have been the issue, citing reports that people had been buying cheaper alcohol elsewhere and bringing it to the venue to drink.
South Africa's Escalating Violence Crisis
The two attacks came days after a mass shooting by three gunmen at a house party near Durban killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman, and follow a disturbing trend of violence across the country. South Africa's president, Cyril Ramaphosa, told local TV news channels: 'This cannot go on like this. This is the level of criminality that we must bring down, and our security forces are now going to continue pulling out all stops.'
South Africa had a murder rate of almost 40 per 100,000 people in 2024, making it the ninth-highest in the world, with more than 22,700 people murdered in the 12 months to 30 June. The Madlanga commission judicial inquiry has been examining allegations of corruption and criminality within the police in televised hearings for the past year, adding to public frustration.
